in recent weeks, the washing machine and fridge which came with the house have become surplus to requirements. leeds city council will collect such items, but there are restrictions, and you have to wait weeks for the items to be taken.
so praise satan for freecycle, which is a kind of forum where people with stuff the no longer want can pair up with people who want the stuff that other people no longer want. it is simple to use, and there are just a few simple rules, mainly concerned with uses not profiting out of any transactions. we were able to give away our unwanted white goods within hours of posting. This is raw recycling - things that might otherwise end up in landfill are being given a new lease of life.
As well as giving, we are using freecycle to receive. we have requested 'anything useful' for the allotment; however, such things seem to be in demand, as we have had limited success so far. we have picked up some fencing, and a couple of paving slabs. as mentioned in my last post, more successful has been our flirtation with buyandselltoday.co.uk, the snappily titled, more traditional advertising site. items are sold in the traditional way here, but, in an unbelievable stroke of luck, we have secured both a shed and a greenhouse for zero pounds! we will be collecting these during the next few days. just how luck we have been is underlined by the message i received from rich, who has given away his shed: 'had about 90 calls for it in the past few days - just switched my phone off now till it all calms down'.
the concept of classified adverts in local newspapers and magazines has been totally shaken up by the existence of the world wide web. and i for one am pleased with this development.
