You say 'Soda Pop', I say 'Carbonated Water'

What term do you use for 'soft drink'. Here's a map showing what it's called in the US:PopmapI allign myself with the Northwest, Great Plains and Midwest areas in calling it pop.

More Fail

I know I only mentioned the Fail Blog a couple of weeks ago, but there are a couple of plum examples today that I need to share with you.

Advice fail

Phone fail

I just wish they would trust the audience's intelligence to know why the pictures are funny; ditch the hand-drawn arrows I say.

Just a bit of admin

Over the next few days (and probably weeks), I am going to reorganise and reappraise the links that are currently dripping down the right-hand side of this very page (unless you are reading this on Bloglines).

I am going to list all links in separate category-specific posts, and link to these from the sidebar. I think this will make for a neater and more concise set of links.

Fail Safe

I am really enjoying the Fail Blog at the moment. It is a repository for unsuccess, and is incredibly funny.

Attention to detail

I'm really enjoying the regular posts on the Photoshop Disasters blog. They are both jaw-droppingly tragic and very funny. Yesterdays post made me laugh the most:

The spoken word

I often make reference to 'my reader', as if to suggest I have just the one. Yet my stat counter tells me you are in double figures. This is a fine example of my highly-tuned comedy skills.

Anyway, I also know that some of you 'double figures' also enjoy Warming Up, the blog of Richard Herring. He mentioned in a recent post that he has a regular column on the New Statesman website, and that it has recently been brought to his attention that there is a feature whereby his words are read by a kind of robot-voiced woman. This gives rise to an unexpected amusement, and I urge you to check out the latest column; for your convenience, I include the link here.

Blah Blah Blah - since 2004

Phew, that was quite an intense period of blogging during September. I do make things hard for myself, don't I boys and girls? Hopefully, there will further guest blogs coming soon. I should have taken a leaf out of Sarah's book, and written a more succinct account of the holiday. But when I look back on all my holiday reports, I notice that I've never really been able to keep it short.

Anyway, I reckoned it was about time for a little make-over - nothing to drastic, just enough to freshen the place up a bit. Hope you like it (let me know if you do or don't). I also thought that I'd drop the 'no capital letters' policy that has been in place since I commenced to pouring by brain onto my keyboard. It was actually starting to annoy me.

richard herring has written a very amusing and extensive post on a subject that is one of my bugbears.

funny ha ha

richard herring continues to amuse me with his daily blog; wednesday's entry in particular indicates why he has not been allowed to appear live on the telly in recent years.

Currently Boycotting

  • British Gas
...for massively overestimating our final bill, issuing a threatening debt collection letter (despite me calling them three times to tell them they got it wrong), making us pay the incorrect amount until they 'resolved' the problem, and then allowing another debt collection agency to write to us asking for a random amount. Since then, they have cold-called me a couple of times asking if I was interested in hearing about their current 'special offers'. Er, no thank you.
  • Clip Art
    ...for just being.
  • Coca Cola
...for their involvement in the kidnap, torture and murder of employees and union leaders at their columbian bottling plants. No, really!
  • Domino's Pizza
...for (former owner) Tom Monaghan's anti-abortion stance.
  • Enterprise Rent-a-Car
...for telling me literally one hour before i was due to pick up a hired van that there was no van available.
  • Home Delivery Network
...for leaving a cardboard package fullof books and DVDs in our back garden for over twenty-four hours, in the pouring rain. No common sense - it is noly through luck it was not totally damaged (or even stolen).
  • Nestle
...for continuing to promote their baby formula over breastfeeding in the world's poorer countries.
  • Plug-in Air Fresheners
...for being the biggest waste of the planet's resources. Does your room smell? Then why open a window when you can buy a small plastic device that requires further expense in re-fills and electricity?
  • UnicaHome
...for totally letting me down over Christmas; I ordered a product from them as a present for a friend in October; in December, they said they would finally ship it to me, but have not responded to my numerour emails since then. Utter cowboys.
